Why are so many (USA) Americans obsessed with having perfect teeth?

I mean, OK everybody would like to have perfect teeth but that doesn%26#039;t answer my question. Is it just another way of spending money for them, is it a status symbol or what?

Why are so many (USA) Americans obsessed with having perfect teeth?
It%26#039;s a rich and luxerous community. The richer you become, the more focused you would be on problems which less rich people would consider minor or not so significant(like acne, imperfect teath, blemished skin etc), besides, the culture promoted by the very strong and acive media is focused mainly on appearance, which gives it an unpreceded importance in the american society never before experienced in history. Fat or unsocial kids can get harrased and have real trouble at school and sometimes there are suicide attempts because of that, etc.

Yet this tendency of perectingone%26#039;s looks is not a result of an asthetic sense or of developing ahgher senstivity towards beuaty, but is mainly due to accumilating great sums of money, the proof to this is that it goes parallel to a very wide spreed symptoms of obessity. If you ever travel to the staes, you would be amazed by te precentage of fat people there!!

The same symptoms have been present in almost all society during eras or remarkable economic growth(The french used toeat and vomit so they can enjoy more food , the spanishused to make the beds of the nobility from pure gold, etc)

It is perfectly naural to act pampered when you can afford it:)

The drawback is , of course, is the possibility to become softer, or to be unable tounderstand how do poorer people think, or what types of life they could endure. and this could be a very serious drawback sometimes.
Reply:it looks nicer and is more attractive and messed up teeth would be wierd when you are making out
Reply:Heck I cannot afford perfect teeth so oh well,,,,my husband and son still love me!
Reply:I guess it%26#039;s a symbol of youth and healt. Everybody has problems with teeth as they grow older.
Reply:First of all, so they don%26#039;t cause pain. Second so people can look their best. If you are looking your best you can perform at a higher level of competence because you have more self confidence.
Reply:because we want clean o r a l

Reply:Perfect teeth are a part of good health and beauty.
Reply:it may be symbol or status they maight be clean their teeths with colgate.
Reply:It is for their own self image. I had a big space in my front teeth that I was always self conscious of. One day I caught a baseball with my mouth (not on purpose) and lost 3 front teeth. The dentist hooked me up with no space and I could not stop smiling. So that is why I say self image.
Reply:I%26#039;d go with American culture is so inundated with the message if you don%26#039;t look beautifull or handsome you are unworthy. Also it is accepted in the US that bad looking teeth can and should be fixed unless you are very poor. I%26#039;d say it goes along with masking all natural body scents no matter what and that outward appearance is easier to perfect than inward being.
